책 소개
Based on the study of above-mentioned three categories of contemporary American prose poetry, this dissertation will analyze how the contemporary American prose poets express their different views in different voices through the postmodern “little narratives” revealed in the prose poetic writing and expound the theoretical development of contemporary American prose poetry since the Second World War. The three major typical categories, chosen for the major concern in this dissertation, are “object” prose poetry, “allegory” prose poetry and “autobiography” prose poetry. Their respective pioneers are Robert Bly, Russell Edson and Lyn Hejinian, all of whom are wildly acclaimed as the practitioners and theoreticians of contemporary American prose poetry. In conclusion, the three major categories of contemporary American prose poetry display a strong tendency of postmodern narrativity since the 1950s. The contemporary American prose poets pay more attention to the construction of narrative discourses in a prose poem and discard “grand narrative” for “little narrative” in order to seek an accurate self-expression in the postmodern discourse. This postmodern narrativity of contemporary American prose poetry not only embodies the flexibility and freedom of prose but also contains the lyricism and conception of poetry. The prose poetry as a particular genre has an energetic vitality and powerful vastness with the mixture of lyricism, narration and postmodern aesthetics.
