Welcome MessagesOn behalf of the organizing committee, it is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to Ergoship 2021. I also thank all the sponsors for their technical and financial support; all the session chairs and speakers for their participation and contribution; and all the committee members for their team work and follow-through.First of all, I am highly pleased as the Korea Institute of Maritime Fisheries Technology (KIMFT) acquired the honor to host this ERGOSHIP 2021 Academic Conference for the first time in Korea.It is a great pity that we cannot meet each other in person due to the pandemic. However, I think it will serve as a great arena for a better understanding. Recently, the technological realization for operating Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) is close to becoming a reality in the maritime industry.Two-day conference Ergoship 2021, which embarked today, will introduce various studies related to the shipping industry, ergonomics, Human and Machine by focusing on the main topic of Human Factors in MASS Operation.In particular, researches on MASS is closely related to Human Factors and is expected to change the role and responsibility of the crew. In the research and development of various technologies related to MASS, Human Factors could be one of the most crucial sectors. Simultaneously, I believe that various studies are required on topics such as understanding the relationship between MASS systems and operators, identifying safety issues within the system, consideration of labor factors while designing the MASS system, and application of simulation in MASS.Against this backdrop, KIMFT hopes to promote various research exchanges related to MASS by hosting this Ergoship 2021 conference with Western Norway University of Applied Sciences to share international findings on MASS and human factors.KIMFT is a maritime education institute operated by the government of South Korea and has a great interest in the researches mentioned above. The institute has a variety of training/research infrastructures, including four training ships and more than 30 sets of simulators, to provide training to more than 30,000 crew per year. In particular, recently, KIMFT installed simulators for remote control training of autonomous ships and has a plan to conduct various education programs and researches by utilizing them.Total 14 research studies, which will be presented at this ERGOSHIP 2021 conference, will this conference more meaningful for many guests who have genuine interests in the research and development related to MASS, ship automation, Human Factors, and safety issues on ships. In addition, the keynote speeches, which will be delivered by three internationally renowned scholars in MASS and ergonomic researches, will further clarify the purpose and aims of this Ergoship 2021 conference. Once again, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you including committee members who have generously contributed their time and effort to make the Ergoship 2021 a great success. I aware that this would not have been possible without the enthusiastic participation.Thank you again and welcome to the Ergoship 2021.
