책 소개
Preface Ⅰ “SAAM FIVE ELEMENT ACUPUNCTURE is a meridian based approach” is the first sentence I usually start with in my lectures on Saam acupuncture. Whenever I gave lessons on Saam acupuncture to western scholars and practitioners, I felt the need of an English textbook for learners to study further. As the first step, I decided to translate Saam’s original text into English although I knew translating classic books is always hard and laborious due to the gap of time and culture in-between. Saam was a Korean buddhist monk who sought to explore the my- steries of our bodies’ innate Yin Yang and Five Elements. Typically, Saam Acupuncture uses a combination of Five trans- porting points of the involved meridians that aims to treat the disease by harmonizing the whole body. The text is composed of 43 chapters covering diverse illnesses ranging from stroke to hemorrhoids with specific classifications and acupuncture for- mulae. In fact, I have found that the fundamental principle of acupuncture point combination, tonifying mother for deficiency and sedating son for excess syndromes, was also mentioned in several other texts. However, no classic books other than Saam’s acupuncture text contained practical information, specific acu- puncture formulae, and manual techniques on a number of disorders. Moreover, Saam described a number of modified formulae to overcome the limitations of just using basic formulae to treat various diseases more effectively based on his abundant clinical experience. Although not all the modified formulae can be understandable from the knowledge of basic principle, I would like to advise readers to use Saam’s basic formulae with a meridian based approach in the beginning. Later, consider applying the modified ones in this book. With experience, I trust you can make your own modifications afterwards. There is a Korean proverb, ‘Starting is half of the task’. Although there will be limitations in fully understanding Saam acupuncture with only this book, I hope this first English translation of Saam Five Element Acupuncture can guide readers through a wholistic and systematic acupuncture method. I would like to acknowledge Dr. Suk-Kyun Hahn for his great co-work, Dr. Sung chul Kim for his nice photos, and Dr. Dalho Kim for his dedicated bibliographical study on Saam Acupuncture. I also appreciate Drs. Jeongmin Ko, Hyojung Kwon, Jieyoun Chung, Jihye Kim for their thoughtful assistance. Finally, I thank God, my respectable parents, brother, sister, lovely Dohee, Jonghyun, and Eujin. Jan. 2009. Sanghoon Lee, KMD, PhD, LAc.
