To commemorate the nomination of Hanji for inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2026, we are publishing a special volume dedicated to Hanji, Korea’s traditional handmade paper. This volume explores the history and traditional production process of Hanji, as well as the distinctive qualities and exceptional characteristics that set it apart. It also features interviews with Hanji masters who continue to preserve and transmit the tradition today. In addition, the volume highlights cases in which Hanji has been used for the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage overseas, examines its growing applications as a versatile material in contemporary contexts, and considers its future potential as the tradition continues to evolve and expand.
