책 소개
From the beginning of civilization, people have tried to give expression to the world they experience. This is often done with some type of rhythm called poetry. It is the most significant expression of thoughts brought forth into the spoken word. What makes poetry great is that it expresses ideas and feelings in ways that others can relate to. It gives thoughts a type of form. The poet must choose the right words to make these images concrete. John Milton found poetry to be “simple, sensuous, and impassioned.” The first function of poetry is to please the senses. Poets explain sights, sound, and colors in ways that produce these images in the reader’s minds. This is often accomplished in a musical form. Poetry is found in every aspect of creative expression: in songs, dramas, stories, myths, even in modern popular music. No one can resist its attraction. A life without poetry of any kind is life without enjoyment. The purpose of this book is to bring the enjoyment of reading poetry to second language learners. To assist the beginner, we, the editors, have divided this book of poetry into two sections. The first is themes. There are various themes that can be found in poetry, but the four that we found to be the most inspiring are themes of love, personal identity, solitude, and freedom. The second section is elements of poetry. Again, there are so many elements to choose from that we had to limit ourselves to just five: diction, syntax, irony and paradox, figures of speech, and the sound of poetry.
