The ‘DMZ’(Demilitarized Zone) is an end product of the Korean War. Watch towers and sentry posts were set up and landmines were buried underground on the battlefield of the North and the South. Sixty years have passed since then. Unlike the literal meaning of the name of the place, the DMZ at present is highly militarized; soldiers of two Koreas are lying in ambush and searching the area. They even set fires and tear down hills to keep better watch on the movements of each other. During the whole time, however, the DMZ has also been a space for life; wide varieties of wildlife have been thriving in the mountains, valleys, streams, and swamps. A generation of grasses, trees, and flowers was succeeded by another, continuing life. Truly the DMZ is a place of clean air, soil and water, and it remains ‘a rich repository of the ecosystem’, a haven for Korean endemic species. The DMZ is a long band of land dividing the Korean peninsula east and west. In order to realize our long-cherished wish of reunification, the DMZ needs to be changed into a space of peace and communication. Unless accompanied by the transformation of this very place, peace and unification of the Korean peninsula would never be possible. The peace of the DMZ equals the peace of the peninsula. To make our long-cherished wish of reunification come true, we need to make the DMZ a sanctuary of peace. To make the DMZ ‘a demilitarized zone’ in its true sense is a momentous step toward a unified nation. Currently a suspicious North Korean atmosphere is sensed in the tight-rope inter-Korean relationship alternating confrontation and dialogue under the changes of international dynamics. There are mixed feelings in the age of national division: concerns about the unstable future and expectation for unification. The DMZ stands out, in the inter-Korean relationship and in the unification process, as a space intensively representing the entire spectrum of the difficult problems. This explains why the DMZ calls for more attention and understanding than ever
