The social conflicts and costs associated with inter-Korean institutional integration can only become minimized when the perception of North Korean residents can be reflected in the integration progress in a mutually interactive way. However, since North Koreans have experienced very different political and economic systems under the three-generational monolithic leadership and a deformed socialist planned economy, they are more likely to get confused and face challenges in the process of accepting liberal democracy and the market economy when institutional integration between the two Koreas is pursued. So it is necessary to get a grasp with how and to what extent North Korean residents understand the political and economic systems and to which level they accept such systems. The author attempts to carry out an indirect survey on the perception of North Korean defectors due to the practical limitation of not being able to conduct a direct survey on North Korean residents.
