책 소개
Validating the performance of a nuclear waste disposal system greatly contributes to decreased uncertainty in the long-term safety of high-level waste repositories. It also improves public confidence in nuclear safety. The in-situ performance of a waste disposal system, including its primary components, such as the engineered barrier system (EBS), should be verified to enhance the credibility of nuclear safety. In this context, this report summarizes various in-situ tests conducted in the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) Underground Research Tunnel (KURT) and numerical analyses since 2006. A coordinated research program on numerical analysis and code development is also introduced. The report is divided into two parts: Phase I, covering research carried out before the KURT expansion, and Phase II, covering research conducted after the expansion. Various in-situ tests have been performed to validate the EBS performance. These tests include borehole heater tests to investigate the thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical behaviors of the near-field rock mass, excavation damage zone characterization, and observation of elastic wave propagation through the rock mass. In addition, the In-situ Demonstration of Engineered Barrier System test is currently underway to analyze the thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled behaviors of the EBS in KURT. The natural barrier was also studied via in-situ tests, such as solute migration tests, tests on major water-conducting features, tracer tests, monitoring of hydro- and geochemistry, and evaluation of groundwater colloids. This report will be continuously updated according to the current and future in-situ tests in KURT and explains the past and present status of in-situ validation technologies of waste disposal at KAERI.
