책 소개
A New Grammar that Restores the Reality of History. History does not exist solely through records. Records are inevitably selected by someone's intent and processed to suit the tastes of power. Characters on paper can speak falsehoods, but the physical traces history leaves on the earth and the scientific indicators never lie. Yet tragically, history has clung only to the fragile characters left on paper. Where documents vanished, humanity's memory became stuffed; where documents were distorted, history lost its way and drifted. In this book, I propose new ways of viewing history. It is the establishment of ‘The Tools of Historical Interpretation,’ Just as we don't merely look at blueprints when building a structure not only by looking at blueprints but by measuring the bearing capacity of the ground, calculating the strength of the rebar, and considering climate changes just as we must do with history itself. I name all the academic achievements modern humanity has made in fields like archaeology, genetics, materials engineering, meteorology, and geology as ‘tools’ for interpreting history. Where documents fall silent, we must listen to the testimony of things. These tools sometimes become microscopes tracking the movement of minute genetic information, and sometimes become telescopes illuminating the immense mechanical principles embedded in the construction of ancient fortresses. This book is not the exclusive property of any particular nation or ethnicity. It encompasses the entire fierce spiral trajectory of human civilization—from its colossal stirrings on the African savannah to the design, prosperity, and eventual demise of empires. There are no sacred grounds when tracing the flow of energy. There are no sanctuaries in tracking its flow. The tools I present are not fixed fossils; they will expand infinitely as human insight deepens. Before the fiction called orthodoxy, we will sharpen the blade of genetics; before the gaps in records, we will apply the engineer's ruler to restore the substance of universal human history. But one thing must not be misunderstood. 45 or so precise tools in hand does not mean anyone can confront the substance of history. If tools were truth, then the moment modern science arrived, all the puzzles of history should have already been solved. But why is history still shrouded in fog? Because interpreting history is not the naive task of merely listing tools. It is the ‘extreme labor of thought’ that weaves together tens of thousands of fragmented physical indicators into a single organic weave them into a single organic whole. The task of aligning materials-engineering numbers, genetic variations, and meteorological data onto a single spiral trajectory and reading the ‘civilizational inevitability’ behind it is like drawing a single divine figure by connecting tens of thousands of points in pitch-black darkness. Most historians, unable to bear the weight of the data, flee back to the familiar embrace of texts or become buried in the fragments of tools and miss the overall flow of events. Tools can be held by anyone, but the ‘penetrating insight’ that makes those tools point in one direction is a domain not anyone can possess. I have devoted my entire life to sharpening those tools. is a realm not anyone can possess. I devoted my entire life to tempering these tools. At that critical point where empirical gains from the field collide with theoretical analysis from the ivory tower sparking fire, I finally heard the immense chorus testified by the objects themselves. The tools contained in this book are the spoils won after that fierce struggle, the fingerprints (指紋). Now I present these powerful and dangerous tools to you. These tools will destroy your existing worldview and plunge you into the agony of interpretation. But once you pass through that tunnel of agony and become familiar with the grammar of Tonghye I present, you will finally be able to see the marvelous true face that human civi…
