The Unrecorded Time of Darkness, and the Light of Empirical Evidence I once went through a period of anguish that nearly turned me into a destroyer of history. Thirty years ago, in my youth, I stood alongside the “technicians of darkness” who scoured the graves across the nation’s mountains and rivers, instantly discerning the humidity of the soil layers and the location of artifacts. As a firsthand witness, I observed their uncanny ability to pierce through the earth’s treasures with a single probe, as well as the ruthless mechanics of a distribution network where artifacts were “laundered” through the hands of fences and vanished. The temptation was both sweet and deadly. The arrogance that knowledge equaled money, and that a single excavation could secure a lifetime of wealth, shook me to my core. But in the end, I laid down that probe and picked up a pen. It was not out of moral puritanism, but out of the minimal reverence a human being must hold before the vast blueprint of “historical legitimacy.” While looters see artifacts as “commodities” to be broken apart and sold off, as a historian, I saw them as “condensed data” to restore the blueprint of civilization. Just as that night of greed, when the capstone of Seokgatap twisted, paradoxically awakened the treasure of humanity known as the *Mugujeonggwang Daedaranikyeong* I too, through the experience of piercing through the ecosystem of darkness, paradoxically became more attached to the tool of light known as “scientific verification.” This book is not merely a technical manual for dating artifacts or appraising relics. The human eye, the human mouth, and the arrogance masquerading as authority can easily transform fakes into genuine articles and distort history. However, the thermal luminescence (TL) remembered by soil particles and the optical luminescence (OSL) of light trapped in darkness for hundreds of thousands of years never lie. I now leave behind the anecdotes of the countless “living witnesses” I have encountered and the ruthless atmosphere of the black market, seeking instead to trace the truth of human civilization using only the yardstick of “the condensation and ascent of energy.” Through these “tools of empirical proof,” I will demonstrate that while the statute of limitations of the law may expire, the statute of limitations of history never does. This is my destiny—the reason I chose a pen over a probe—and my sincere message to the readers of this era.
