Into Multiple Layers of Time / 여러 개의 시간 속으로 Time is a curious thing. Different layers of time accumulate on a single place. Past and present exist side by side. In Jingwan-dong, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, a twenty-minute walk from Gupabal Station, I saw two times flowing together. One layer belongs to Gijachon, 1970s. A small village built for journalists. Households lived modest, steady days. Mornings began with climbs to work. Evenings ended passing the transmission tower. Market-day bustle, dog-walk paths, sunset moments where the day’s weight rested. With Eunpyeong New Town, the village disappeared. Stone steps, ginkgo shade, village roads, the transmission tower— all still hold time quietly. Another layer is deeper. Umulgol, where courier horses rested in Joseon. Geumseongdang Shrine, small building from before 1880s. A single miryu tree beside a home. Each holds centuries of time, like a voice across ages. With a camera, I walked both villages. Empty lots, trees, paths, sunsets, stone steps, streams. At each scene, a question arose: What were their daily lives like? Morning rush, evening calm, neighbor greetings, children laughing, voices at the well, horses’ hooves on the road. Where have these moments gone? Perhaps they remain in hearts. Now, quietly, in these photographs. Time carries many things, yet leaves something behind— as memory, story, image. Standing here, I understood: What disappears, and what remains. Times and places shape who we are. We are people walking within time.
