Beside it, Daeja-dong hosts Seoul Seunghwawon Crematorium. Founded 1930, relocated 1970, quietly bidding farewell to countless lives. I once looked from a high apartment. During a hard time, thinking of my late sister, I returned. Fragments of memory in hand, I walked slowly along Gongneungcheon. Before me, life unfolded differently. A couple walking hand in hand. A mother and child on stepping stones. A young man on a bicycle. An elderly person with a dog. Passing a small grove, unexpected warmth arrived. I went to see death, yet saw life. To confirm endings, yet found beginnings. To recall parting, yet witnessed meetings. Life and death do not oppose. Like Gongneungcheon water, they flow quietly side by side. I now turn to Dongsan-dong. The window I once looked from, I now see from outside. Size the same, gaze changed. Back then, dizzy and staring. Now, calm and seeing clearly. There was a time unbearably hard. I never thanked my wife who silently stayed by my side. After time passed, standing at the window again, I felt the weight and warmth of life it once held. Vanished, yet not vanished. Not vanished, yet vanished. Moments like these. Through photographs, we revisit places we lived and traces of time lingered in. At Gongneungcheon and Dongsan-dong, life and death quietly intersect. I understand time’s meaning. Memory flows like water, yet remains. Once-dizzying view, now calm. Proof of the time we have lived.
