Along with the victory of AlphaGo, the term 'The Fourth Industrial Revolution' has begun to appear in our society. The term is mentioned in almost all fields, such as politics, economy, education, and culture. One can easily find seminars and discussions entitled "The Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Future of…” What is causing Korean society to speak so passionately about the Fourth Industrial Revolution? The Fourth Industrial Revolution is, in a word, a revolution of productivity. Artificial intelligence and internet technology are integrating to maximize productivity in the manufacturing and service industries. At factories that are controlled online, tailored production allows for the needs of individual consumers to be met. Hospitals connected to the online systems will be able to treat patients with more accurate diagnoses. The influence of increased productivity during the Fourth Industrial Revolution is expected to exceed that of the current internet revolution. The reason being that the Fourth Industrial Revolution will maximize the productivity of entire industries whereas the impact of the ongoing internet revolution is limited to retail and consumer service industries, such as e-commerce and games. Whether the changes in productivity will be medicine or poison to humankind is yet unknown. However, throughout history, humankind, unlike the animal kingdom, has been anticipating and preparing for the coming changes to a certain extent. History has also shown that the change in productivity has affected the overall lives of humans. This book examines the expected impacts of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, not only in industries but also on people’s lives in general. This book will also analyze how the Fourth Industrial Revolution might bring about problems of various kinds, such as in the social and ecological domains, and in the economy of human resources. Different eras require different types of talent and forms of society. Educational, social, and institutional reforms are carried out according to the different demands of the age. Although many books and media deal with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, most of them only discuss how technologies and industries should be prepared, and there is little mention of society in general and the people within it. In the end, all technologies and industries should work for the benefit of people who use them. This book will examine more fundamental issues concerning sustainability, by including not just the economic and industrial sectors, but also the social and cultural environment in which the Fourth Industrial Revolution will occur. This book deals with the direction of human beings in the context of change. I hope that further discussion and detailed research centering on people in the political, social, educational, environmental, and cultural domains will be conducted in the future.
