책 소개

This book, Corrective Feedback in Instructed Second Language Learning, covers the theory, research, and practice of oral and written feedback. The book begins by introducing some of the concepts that are essential to understanding CF (PART 1). PART 2 explains crucial L2 acquisition theories (i.e., nativism, cognitive theories, and sociocultural theory), focusing on how these theories account for and value the role of CF in L2 learning. PART 3 and PART 4 focus on empirical studies in CF. PART 3 starts with the introduction of backgrounds of oral feedback followed by descriptive and experimental research. Descriptive research shows how oral feedback is used and how learners respond to it in both dyadic and classroom interactions. Experimental studies provide empirical evidence supporting the facilitative role of oral CF in L2 development. Along with the empirical findings of oral feedback, PART 3 discusses important issues surrounding oral CF and offers some practical tips that will be useful for L2 teaching. PART 4 covers written CF studies and begins with introductory sections that provide readers with a basic understanding of written feedback. PART 4 is comprised of reviews and discussion of written CF studies informed by two different theoretical aspects: cognitive theory and sociocultural theory. Examining the studies from both perspectives enables readers to understand how these two differ from each other and how, at the same, they can mutually inform each other. Based on the research findings, PART 4 discusses the remaining issues in written CF and offers some practical tips for feedback providers. The studies examined in PART 3 and PART 4 prove the usefulness of CF. However, they also show that feedback is not always effective for L2 learning. PART 5 is devoted to the investigation and discussion of what brings about different outcomes across feedback studies by examining both learner external and internal factors. This section illuminates why some learners benefit from CF while others do not. As a means of concluding the book, PART 6 offers a summary of CF research findings and suggests pedagogical applications and tips for teachers.
