책 소개

Introduction “The dignity of man rests above all on the fact that he is called to communion with God. The invitation to converse with God is addressed to man as soon he comes into being. For if man exists it is because God has created him through love, and through love continues to hold him in existence. He cannot live fully according to truth unless he freely acknowledges that love and entrusts himself to his creator. Many however of our contemporaries either do not at all perceive, or else explicitly reject, this intimate and vital bond of man to God.” [The Pastoral Charter on the Church in the Modern World] {Joy and Hope, article 19} More than two thousand years have passed since Jesus was born in this world. During that time people have believed, loved and attempted to follow in his footsteps. Is living a life of faith where we believe in, love and follow Jesus that difficult? Does a life of faith mean that only the people who have left everything behind and turned away from the world can fully understand and follow this way? That’s not right is the correct answer to that question. The way to believe in, love and follow Jesus is really easy therefore everyone is capable of believing, loving and following him. We have only felt that the way was difficult because there has been no one that properly taught us the way. Most of those that taught us made the way appear to be difficult. Again even those that taught us the way failed to teach us the complete way and only taught us pieces of the way. Furthermore we had not reached the Lord’s time. In fact the way to follow Jesus is not difficult and very interesting. Anyone that has a mind to love God can follow that way. Everyone including those with little education, manual laborers, those as poor as church mice, the highly educated, the highly skilled, the extremely rich, laity, priests and religious, if they have the heart to love God can follow that way. However what is crystal clear is that everyone has to become like a “little child” [See Luke 10:21] Unless one becomes like a little child before God one will not be able to follow this way. This way is “a life of surrender”. A Holy Life [spirituality] of Surrender is the beginning and the end of a life of faith in God. If like Abraham in Old Testament times and Mary in New Testament times and like Jesus who in obedience to God the Father came into this world to form a New Covenant we live lives of Holy Abandonment all of us can easily live interesting lives of faith. “Faith is fifirst of all a personal adherence of man to God. At the same time, and inseparably, it is a free assent to the whole truth that God has revealed. A personal adherence to God and assent to his truth, Christian faith diffffers from our faith in any human person. It is right and just to entrust ourselves wholly to God and to believe absolutely what he says. It will be futile or false to place such faith in a creature.” [Article 150 of the Catholic Church’s Catechism] The life [Spirituality] is the life of a free person. Just as water rides freely on a flowing stream, and wind rides on the blowing wind, one who on priest or the sister or a prayer I would offer as a spiritual gift. But it is not that at all. Speaking straight-forwardly prayer of aspiration is a short prayer that is repeated unceasingly. I have thought about the question posed by Jesus and Paul the Apostle of how can I be awake and pray all the time. One answer is to memorize a piece of scripture and repeat it unceasingly as a short prayer. Another is the Jesus prayer that originated in the Orthodox Church as a prayer of aspiration of abandonment. The holy prayer of aspiration of abandonment is like this. 1. It is confessing that the God I believe in created everything including me and that he is almighty, merciful, holy God that rules the world. I confess that this God is “my Father”. 2. As God is my Father I do not seek anything else except that He treats with me as He pleases…
