책 소개
“Form is art.” This sentence conveys the essence of cinematographer Jung Il-Sung’s film philosophy. Jung’s film form, which he pursued and perfected throughout his life, has rooted in the Korean cinema with its elegant and maverick ways. We would like to refer to him—who has taken Korean filming aesthetics to another level—as The Artist with Class, the Voyager-Iconoclast. Breathtaking visual images and bold, experimental colors showcased in Kim Ki-young’s films in 1970s signaled the appearance of Jung Il-Sung the “expressive auteur.” His camera put the center of gravity on the form and simultaneously presented a balanced image of two different worlds of Yu Hyun-mok’s realism and Kim Soo-yong’s modernism. In 1979 Jung met with Im Kwon-taek to work on Divine Bow. And in 1981 with Mandara, he showcased mise-en-scène and sequence unprecedented in the Korean cinema, marking a new era in Korean aesthetics. The following partnership of Jung and Im opened a new chapter in the history of Korean cinema. Jung Il-Sung has accompanied major directors indelible in the Korean film history, including Kim Soo-yong, Lee Doo-yong and Bae Chang-ho. Discussion on his filming aesthetics is as interesting as essential to understanding the history of Korean cinema.
