책 소개
Foreword It was in November 2016 that the project plan was finalized outlining the participation of Chungnam National University’s Translation and Interpretation Center in the research project to translate Korean classics and ancient documents into English, as part of the academic endeavors supported by the Initiative for the College of Humanities’ Research and Education (CORE). The time line for the project meant that a limited time would be allowed for the publication process, including the translation into English. Looking back, I wonder if I should have selected a book to be translated and kick-started the English translation as soon as the Center was selected as the recipient of the CORE initiative and the translation of Korean classics became a focal point of the project proposal. Nonetheless, I am delighted to see the Nong-am Collection of Letters published despite the short time frame thanks to the devotion of those who participated in the project. It is my pleasure to announce that the writings of Changhyeob Kim have leapt over a period of more than three hundreds of years and finally been brought into the light of the world once again in a newly translated version. Changhyeob Kim (1651-1708) was a Confucian scholar and a great writer during the reign of King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty. His letters to Sijwa Kim, his nephew and disciple, were compiled by Seonggeun Kim (1756-?), who was the great-great grandson of Sijwa Kim, and were bound into a hardback book entitled Nong-amjinjeok (Nong-am Collection of Letters). It was originally published in five volumes, out of which, four (Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3, and Volume 5) have survived, while Volume 4 was lost to the ages. The four surviving volumes of the book were registered as tangible cultural heritage No. 16 of Daejeon Metropolitan City in March 1989 and they are now preserved at the Daejeon Museum of History. The Korean Society of Cursive Script completed deciphering the cursive writing of the ancient book and translated it into the Korean language and the publishing company Minsokwon published Nong-amjinjeok (Nong-am Collection of Letters) - Life, Letters and Thoughts of Changhyeob Kim in 2015. What we are about to see is the same book translated into English. Thanks to the meticulous work of the Korean Society of Cursive Script in translating Nong-am’s cursive calligraphy from the early 18th century into modern Korean language based on the current spelling system, using the Rules for Standard Korean Language and with annotations provided to help understanding, we are able to look into and examine both the daily life and the academic world of an intellectual who lived 300 years ago. Through these records, we are able to engage in dialogues with the past. The publication of the English version of Nong-amjinjeok is indeed a worthy achievement as it will become a bridge to the past, helping modern readers overcome the hurdles of time and space and facilitating more awe-inspiring dialogues between the present and the era of Changhyeob Kim. This is the power of translation and the significant role that translation plays. I sincerely hope that this book will be cited often, not only in the field of Chinese-language literature of Korea, but also in the broader translation community. It will become an important reference book and help the distribution of Korean classical literature to international readers. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the CORE program and its Director Seongsim Hong for the support and Rijin Kim and DongRim Suh who willingly undertook the task of translation despite the restrictions placed on the deadline and the budget.
