Introduction & Acknowledgements Korea, known for its dramatic but outstanding development in about half a decade, has had its own ordeals and hardships; dragged into complicated political relationships due to the location between Japan and China, and being divided into groups through foreign influences. It had to survive and hope for happiness that may be laid in front of it. Meanwhile, during this long trial of struggling, Korea has formed a unique and multifarious culture. This book was published for the purpose of introducing that culture and inducing readers to understand it through historical and cultural context. Starting from Josun dynasty to late 1980s, it contains 7 historical movies based on different periods of history, with a synopsis, translations of important scenes, an interview with each director, few articles about that period's culture and history, and filmography. Since not a wide range of people acknowledge Korea's characteristic culture, we hope that you readers can not only experience Korea's identity in a direct way to the fullest but also create an interest in it. Before beginning our book, we would like to thank a few people for participating in the production. Yura Jeong assisted us in writing a few articles for ＜Masquerade＞, ＜The Attorney＞, and ＜Assassination＞, as well as translating a number of scenes in each movie. Also, we appreciate John Georgie and Jong-hyup Ahn for proofreading and giving advice about further directions. This book is published for non-profit purposes and is donated to several Korean Cultural Institutes including Spain, Germany, France, and etc. We believe this book will help you truly understand the lessons that Korean Historical movies give us.
