책 소개

This publication is not a memoir. Nor is it an autobiography. It is a collection of 51 highly personal stories which depict selected aspects of my life both in Korea and in America with special emphasis on how a Korean became a scholar in the United States. The original idea for this collection came from my son and daughter-in-law who proposed that I write my personal stories for their children and other relatives. I found the idea intriguing and acceptable. I began to write my stories about a variety of challenges and opportunities and successes and failures that I had encountered throughout my life. As admonished by my father, my life-long motto was a journey “in search of excellence” in whatever tasks I undertook. In this publication, therefore, I attempted to address the evolution of my scholarly achievements and professional activities. A reader could be confused or even irritated by long lists of individuals and institutions, but I just wanted to make my records as accurate as possible. For this purpose, I took advantage of the period of COVID-19 pandemic which prevented me from undertaking sustained research at the archives and libraries. They remained closed for a long time. Stories were indeed written for my relatives and intimate friends, not for public or commercial consumption.
