Disturbants of land, breath, sound: Aesthetics of Post-colonial culture “The imagination will be suppressed by the power of generalization and normalization of globalization” Arjun Appadurai(1996) What can art do when the identity of a city has been erased? This exhibition invited Mexican, Brazilian, Hong Kongese, Indonesian, South Korean and Thai artists who have experienced colonialism culturally and politically. The exhibition reconstructs postcolonial discourse via the practices of artists who interpret and build cultural diversity through postcolonial urban discourse. This exhibition defines postcolonialism as a collective concept referring to all cultures that have experienced the yoke of imperialism from the colonial era to the present. De-colonialism is an epistemic movement to define the identities of those who lost their culture under the suppression of the imperialism of the first world. Also, it is a movement of the people of marginalized countries who try to reclaim their subjectivity and voice. There are three critical points to be discussed in postcolonial discourse. The first is the risk that imperialist culture be conceived as suppressing the third world unilaterally. Cultural imperialist theory has been criticized as a theory which considers people in the colony who are under the influence of colonial culture as impotent and passive beings. The second mistake is to frame the goal of postcolonialism as a return to pure ethno-nationalism. Homi Bhabha has argued that pursuing a cultural identity can always wrongly lead to nationalism. He stressed that the dangers of nationalism can be avoided by re-contextualizing hybridity rather than emphasizing the cultural superiority and purity of a subjugated people. The third is that postcolonial discourse is not only cultural, political, and economical but it is also fundamentally a geographic concept. The purpose of colonization is the exploitation of manpower and resources from third world nations through the occupation of their territory. Neoliberalism can be defined with keywords such as monetization, deregulation, the downsizing of welfare, and monopolies of the global market by multinational corporations (MNCs). These characteristics are the background of a massive international city called Cosmopolitan. Sassen defined Cosmopolitan as the site where multinational corporations set up their branches. In other words, Cosmopolitan is a large-scale city in which people with the ability to consume live, where they have enough infrastructure and manpower for the corporation, and where there is cheap labor to serve those people. Multinational corporations have become critical economic and political subjects in Cosmopolitan and trendsetters who define urban culture. This essay defines colonial cities after the neoliberal regime as neo-postcolonial cities. Neo-postcolonial cities have experienced a loss of cultural diversity through the expansion of MNCs…
