책 소개
Cambodia is a country that is a bit off the radar. How much does the fact that it has its own script affect the daily lives of strangers in a faraway land? This book is a report of a kind, arguing that 'writing is a product of society, revealing the history and culture of the people who use it'. The English word 'character', which refers to a character in literature, also means 'letter'. Khmer script is the most "characteristic" of all scripts in the world. Khmer characters resemble people. Each letter is named for a part of the body, and each of the 33 consonants symbolizes a body part. This book introduces the story of Khmer characters, which resemble people, as a process that leads to birth, growth, adulthood, middle age, old age, and the cycle of life. Author Noh Sung-il uses the Khmer script to speak of 'people'. This is not a story of Cambodia framed by outsiders, such as poor economic conditions, famous tourist destinations, a country of foreign workers, and orientalism, but rather a story of Cambodian people, united by the theme of Khmer script, who tell their own stories.
