책 소개

The International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (ICHCAP) has been committed to building mechanisms for effectively sharing information on intangible cultural heritage, raising the visibility of said heritage through regional information use, and strengthening networks among communities, civil society, and related organizations. At the same time, ICHCAP recognizes the crucial role of incorporating intangible cultural heritage in accomplishing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals as a driver, enabler, and guarantee of sustainable development. Traditional crafts, in the context of sustainable development, are emerging as a modern way of thinking differently. These practices have the potential to contribute to redefining and shaping a new economic model based not only on economic growth or livelihoods in local communities but also on notions of self-actualization, fulfillment, and levels of happiness. Traditional crafts can, therefore, provide insights for positive transformation, as they create the conditions for socially connected and sustainable places, strengthening local communities. ICHCAP supports the promotion of traditional crafts and has gathered exemplary cases of “Good Practices in Policies and Activities on Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Crafts for Sustainable Development in Communities.” The main objective is to raise awareness of the significance of traditional crafts, strengthen the expert network among relevant stakeholders, and serve as a reference to help each community develop its traditional crafts in a modern way. This collection of exemplary cases is based on case-study reports compiled by ten experts in the Asia-Pacific region, who showcased the landscape of the traditional craft sector in their respective countries and communities. The efforts that went into compiling this collection include elaboration by the authors, editors, and supervisors to ensure that it is valuable and meaningful for the readers.
