책 소개

Prologue My venture into volunteer service and essay writing on Korean Palace history wasn't premeditated. Initially, my involvement stemmed from a project called "My Korea," a photo essay capturing Korean lifestyle habits in 2015. Little did I know, this endeavor would ignite an insatiable curiosity for Korean history and customs. Through summarising the Korean lifestyle, my attention shifted towards the palaces of Joseon, sparking a natural progression into historical research. The allure of palace architecture and the narratives embedded within fueled my passion for understanding Korea's rich heritage. For this reason, I have been volunteering as a commentator on weekends at the palace in Seoul since 2014. Although both Koreans and foreigners had a great interest in the palaces in Seoul, no one knew the history of the palace in detail including background. In addition, foreign visitors were curious about why there are palaces in Seoul, how many there are, and what they do. After touring the palace, they asked if there was a recommended place to go. However, it was not always possible to provide explanations to foreign visitors. For them there were only information boards in the palace, books they bought in local bookstores, and YouTube on the Internet. However, the English guidebooks about the palaces in the bookstore were full of names and dates of kings that they could not understand, and most of the content was of interest to students only learning about history. In fact, foreigners were curious as to why there was a palace in Seoul. I was curious about how the shape of the palace differed from that of China, and I was curious about the background of the Seokjojeon in Deoksugung Palace and why it was a Western-style building. They were not interested in the achievements of the King of Joseon and the content of Neo-Confucianism that we often talk about. This book is not a history book that explains the history of Joseon, nor is it a book that explains the palace architecture. It is an essay about the questions I was asked when I gave commentary at the palace every weekend for 10 years and what domestic and foreign tourists were interested in. Meanwhile, people who visited the palace were not only curious about sights in the palace, but also in Seoul and surrounding areas, and also inquired about nearby restaurants. In this regard, I have compiled information that would be useful to you. Although many tourists came to the palace, many executives and employees of international companies were also present. They were very interested in the palace but always asked questions about Korean customs and culture. In their eyes, stories about the palace, stories about Seoul, and Korean culture were all about Korea. I have summarized an essay in the second half that would not misunderstand the behavioral habits of Koreans if they were aware of them in advance. I hope will help foreign visitors who have visited or are planning a trip to Korea to understand palaces in Seoul and Korean culture.
